Tucked high in the White Mountains and surrounded by one of the largest stands of ponderosa pines in the world, the charming town of Pinetop offers a refreshing mountain escape for every kind of traveler—especially those drawn to the outdoors.

At 7,800 feet, the air feels crisp and clean, and the night skies seem close enough to touch. It’s a place where nature sets the pace and the rhythm of daily life slows to something more peaceful.

Four Seasons of Adventure

No matter the time of year, Pinetop offers something to enjoy:

• hiking and biking through forested trails
• fishing and picnicking at serene lakes like Woodland Lake
• golfing on scenic mountain courses
• skiing and snow play in the winter

Geography and Wildlife

Pinetop is surrounded by the White Mountain Apache Tribe lands and national forest, creating a rich and protected natural environment. With more than 50 lakes nearby, wildlife is abundant—elk, deer, black bear, and even mountain lions are occasionally spotted, along with countless smaller species.

Camping and RV Life​

For those traveling with an RV, there are over 25 parks and campgrounds in the area. Popular spots within town include:

• Pine Flats Campground
• Lakeside RV Park

Reservations are recommended, especially during peak seasons.

However, for a more pristine experience with no fees attached, there is Scott’s Reservoir and Los Burros Campground. These campgrounds are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Summer Adventures

With over 200 miles of hiking trails, options range from an easy stroll along the Mogollon Rim Overlook to a challenging 14-mile round trip trek up Mount Baldy, Arizona’s second-highest peak. Golfers will also find several beautiful courses suited to all skill levels..

Winter Fun

Just a short drive away, Sunrise Park Resort offers skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and cross-country trails. For a quieter experience, head to Pole Knoll for peaceful cross-country skiing.

Culture & History

Summer brings lively events like bluegrass festivals and Native American celebrations. History lovers can explore sites such as Casa Malpais Archaeological Park, not far from the town of Springerville offering a glimpse into the region’s ancient past.

The Pinetop area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1800s. The town’s name is said to have come from a local saloon keeper known for his tuft of red hair—earning him the nickname “Pinetop.” Soldiers from nearby Fort Apache would say, “Let’s head to the top of the pines,” and the name stuck.

Before You Go

Because of the high elevation, take time to acclimate and stay well hydrated. Summer monsoon season (July and August) can bring sudden weather changes, so be prepared with layers, food, and water when exploring.
