February 13, 2025-This weeks post is about the many magnificent art museums in Taos, New Mexico

Taos Is Art!

Hello There Reader

While the snow has been rather skimpy this season, there is still lots to do in Taos, New Mexico. With almost 40 galleries and museums worth visiting if its a cold, blustery winter day, you'll never be bored.

Here are a few...

Harwood Museum of ArtFounded in 1923 by the Harwood Foundation, it is the second oldest art museum in New Mexico. Its collections include a wide range of Hispanic works and visual arts from the Taos Society of Artists, Taos Moderns, and contemporary artists-Celebrating 100 years in 2023.

Taos Art Museum at Fechin HousePlan your visit, there are gala tickets, Fechin house exhibitions- (paintings are exhibited for the first time in 60 yrs.) Also a museum store, or you can join the museum for extra benefits.

Mabel Dodge Luhan Historic HouseThe Mabel Dodge Luhan House, also known as the Big House, is a historic house at 240 Morada Lane in Taos. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991. It is now used as a hotel and conference center.

Millicent Rogers MuseumThis art museum in Taos, was founded in 1956 by the family of Millicent Rogers. Initially the artworks were from the multi-cultural collections of Millicent Rogers and her mother, Mary B. Rogers, who donated many of the first pieces of Taos Pueblo art. In the 1980s, the museum was the first cultural organization in New Mexico to offer a comprehensive collection of Hispanic art.

E.L. Blumenschein Home and Museum and Hacienda De Los Martinez

Portions of the Blumenschein Home and Museum were built in 1797. Ernest Blumenschein, co-founder of the Taos Society of Artists, brought his family to the Taos in 1919. The artist and his family lived there for more than 40 years. Mon-Sat: 10-5, Sunday: 12-5.

Kit Carson Home and Museum

Maybe it's a signal pointing to the independent nature of Taos citizens, but one cannot help but note the transformation that Christopher "Kit" Carson underwent as his legend evolved from mountain man, trailblazer and dime novel hero to what many now call a controversial figure. Whatever one's point of view of the man might me, it's impossible to ignore his colorful place in the history of frontier New Mexico.

Couse-Sharp Historic Site Also known as Taos Society for Artist's home. Their 2+ acre campus in the heart of Taos’ central historic district features the former homes and studios of E. I. Couse and J. H. Sharp, two of the American-born, European-trained artists who formed the TSA in 1915.

And last but not least, If you happen to be a Taos local, Sundays is free admission to all museums!

If you like what you are learning and reading about, please share with family and friends. Till next time!
